not sure who said that, or when… or if indeed it ever happened at all.

1992 Wynns Ovens Valley Burgundy Shiraz
back on topic – a customer came up into work about 6 months ago, with a glass of wine to try – testing out our palates, not telling us what it was until we had a guess. my colleague guessed old coonawarra cabernet, 80s, i put my money on 90s victorian shiraz and subsequently won the chocolates. i recalled a gloriously balanced, delightfully spicy old red, that whilst showing it’s years, was a joy to drink. it was infact my first experience with a mature victorian wine. after six months of reminding the customer how wonderful i thought this wine was, i was given a bottle about a month ago. i pondered for several weeks, what to cook and how to drink it – finally this week, i asked the customer in question, what should i do with it? he responded, don’t worry about food, just find a nice friend, open, drink, relax, observe. which is exactly what i’ve done tonight – going from my punctuation, possibly relaxed a little too much!
the wine in question, is 1992 Wynn’s Ovens Valley ‘Burgundy’ Shiraz.. Ovens Valley? what..? that’s exactly what i wondered, dear reader… i decided to do the googling for you;
click!.. Obviously cool – climate, must have been a stellar vintage..
semi translucent deep crimson colour with brick crimson hue. spearminty nose, below; plum, blackberry, new car leather, spice and a faint whiff of vanilla. the medium bodied palate is initially – remarkably still very lively, delivering a short sharp burst of blackberry and plum before the leathery cedary undertones take the reins and drive the long minty finish. the tannins are micro fine, a smidge powdery and a perhaps touch senile – charming, but on occasion prone to snapping and sticking out a bit. the wine retains remarkable balance, it really is a joy to drink. i’d liken it to elle macpherson, probably a few years past her peak, yet still terribly attractive, and will probably remain attractive for a few years yet. 13.5% alc./vol. 2, 6, 7. 15.
